Junior High School Hockey Development Division

Development Philosophy

Our league goes beyond simply providing games—it’s a true developmental pathway for Junior High players preparing to advance to JV and Varsity high school hockey.

With an emphasis on foundational skills, team systems, and game awareness, players develop in a structured, supportive environment designed to build confidence and hockey IQ. Off the ice, athletes form connections with future school teammates, creating camaraderie and a strong sense of community.

Whether your player is new to hockey or preparing for upcoming high school tryouts, this division provides the tools, experience, and guidance needed to take the next step.

Eligibility & Player Placement

  • Open to Junior High–age players in grades 6–8

  • Beginner 9th-grade players may be considered with league approval

  • Open to Recreational and Travel players

  • Current high school players are not eligible

District-Based Teams

All teams are district-bound, meaning players are assigned based on their home address and must play within their designated district program. League will assign players to appropriate districts. 

Current Districts:

  • Orange County

  • Los Angeles

  • Inland Empire

  • San Diego

Example: Orange County players will compete within the OC district, while LA and Inland Empire players will join their respective district clubs.


League Format & Rules

  • 12 games 

  • Teams may schedule practices independently

  • All players must have a current 2025–26 USA Hockey membership

  • USA Hockey rules (tag-up offsides)

  • No overtime during regular-season games

  • NHL-style music during games

Game Format
  • Three 12-minute periods

  • 3-minute warm-up

  • No timeouts

  • 1 hour, 15-minute ice slot

  • Rinks reserve the right to run the clock as needed


Player & Team Requirements

  • All players must be registered and league-approved

  • Coaches must verify and sign the scoresheet before each game

  • League reserves the right to review and restrict players whose skill level (A, AA, or higher) exceeds the intended level of play to maintain competitive balance


Rinks, Events & League Notes

  • Games will be played primarily at Ice Realm Westminster, with additional local partner arenas used as available

  • All-Star Game: Date and format to be announced

  • Championship Game: Top two teams advance to compete for the league title

  • Jr. High Hockey is co-ed and open to players at the recreational and club levels

  • Prior playing experience is recommended

  • The Spring season is expected to feature a minimum of four geographically assigned teams

Eligibility-All teams are district-bound, meaning players are assigned based on their home address to their local district program. For example, the Warriors will operate the Orange County district team, while players in LA or the Inland Empire will join their respective district clubs.Players are required to play within their districts.

Current Districts: Orange County, L.A., Inland Empire, SD

  • Open to all Junior High age players in 6th through 8th  (Beginner High School age 9th-graders may be considered with league approval)

  • Open to Travel and Recreational players

  • Current high school players are not eligible


League Format & Rules

  • 15 regular season games

  • All players need current 2025-26 USA Hockey Membership 
  • USA Hockey Rules (Tag up off-sides)
  • No OT in regular season
  • Music player NHL Style
  • Game Format: Three 15-minute run-time periods (3-Min Warm-up) (No timeouts)

  • If the game is within 1 goal with 2 minutes left in the third period, the game will go to stop time

  • Rink reserve the right for running time (1.15 -hour ice slot) 

  • All players must be registered and approved by league- Coach to verify and sign scoresheet each game

  • Rinks: Ice Realm Westminster, LA Kings Riverside Icetown, and possible other local partner arenas

  • All-Star Game: Date and format TBD

  • Championship Game: Top two teams compete

  • Jr. High Hockey is open to co-ed players at the recreational and club level. Prior playing experience is recommended. To maintain league parity, the league reserves the right to review and restrict players whose skill level (e.g., A, AA, or higher-tier) is above the intended level of play for this division.

Benefits of Jr. High Hockey

Jr. High Hockey is brand new to Southern California and offers a unique opportunity for middle school players to grow and prepare for the next level. The primary goal of the league is to help athletes get ready for the demands of JV and Varsity high school hockey while providing additional ice time for players also competing at the club level.

This league is designed to complement, not compete with, club hockey.


Where Will Games Be Played?

Games will primarily take place at:

  • Ice Realm Westminster

  • Ice Realm Carlsbad(if the San Diego team is filled)

  • Additional local rinks may be added as the league grows


How Do I Know Which Team to Play For?
